While some experts praised the findings, others were more cautious. Dr. Kevin Hall, a scientist and obesity expert at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, said the new study was ambitious and very well run. But he said the researchers used methods that raise questions about the results. One method they used to track metabolism, called doubly labeled water, has not been shown to be reliable in people on low-carb diets and it may have exaggerated the amount of calories the subjects burned, he said.

Now I am having the same problem with my youngest when he turned 1 -_- BUT I have discovered a few months ago both my boys will happily scoff back a vege/chicken curry I make, so I make that once or twice a week (I roast up 2 big chickens and cook extra veges, then use the left overs the next day to make it. Or sometimes make up Cauliflower curry soup from the Wheat Belly book if cauliflower is nice and cheap, and use that.) Unfortunately they will only eat it with rice, but for me personally I would rather them have a decent amount of veges a couple of days a week than cut out the rice completely so it is a compromise I am willing to take 🙂
Did you taste the mixture before you let it harden in the mold? If it was bitter to you before letting it harden, you needed more sweetener. For some getting used to stevia is a big transition. I use the vanilla liquid stevia by the brand Sweetleaf. I have tried Trader Joe’s vanilla stevia but I didn’t like it as much as Sweetleaf. Also different brands of liquid stevia are made differently and the way they are processed to form the liquid will produce different levels of sweetness. NuNaturals vanilla stevia is much sweeter than Sweetleaf. Don’t dump out your bottle but try other recipes with it and hopefully you can use it up and not feel you wasted your money on it. I’m sorry you didn’t like the recipe.
All I can say is I have had fun making two batches already! Thanks so much! Also a nice small snack when all I want is a little bit of chocolate, I just grab a few chips and am so happy! Now I do not have to be concerned when I cannot find Lily’s locally. Matter of fact, will be making my own from now on. Add to my LC ice cream as well!!!!!!! What a great post. I thought i would add about the selection of food you eat on keto and that everyone is different. Some food gives you energy and some doesnt, this varies person to person. I started and quit keto 3 times before i managed to find my balance. The first few times it made be poorly, from the shock of diet change. However, you can wean yourself into the diet which i did the last time when i had the most success.

Hi Priscilla, it’s actually difficult for me to remove the ingredients in my cookbook program to recalculate everything and then add it back. It’s not a very user friendly program. I suggest you use a food journal program like fatsecret.com and add all of the ingredients (minus those for the pastry cream) and see what you get. I’m sorry. Hi Gigi, Low carb and keto is about the balance of macronutrients eaten (fat, protein and carbs), not specifically meat or lack thereof. Most people on keto do eat meat, though some people do vegetarian keto. Fat is actually necessary for many body processes. There is no issue for the kidneys with a high fat diet, but if you eat too much protein that isn’t great for the kidneys. It’s a common misconception that keto is high protein (it isn’t). Keto is great for diabetics as it naturally helps stabilize insulin. Hi Libby, I have been trying to find my way within the LCHF world for a few months and I am just not winning .. I eat a good hearty breakfast and a cup of coffee with cream and I’m good for the day till dinner when i’ll have a salad with chicken or steak .. most days my meals don’t vary (i’m easy that way).. problem is the weight is maintained and I’m just lost 🙁 please would you assist me .. anything would be appreciated 🙂

This did not come out well for me. The consistency is good but the taste is super bitter. At first I didn’t add all the powdered stevia called for because it seemed like a lot of stevia for just the one bar. I wanted to taste as I went. I gradually increased hoping the sweet would outweigh the bitter but I just couldn’t seem to get it right. I took a small bit and mixed it with honey and that tasted much better. But, honey is too high in sugar for me so I was excited about using stevia. Not sure where I went wrong but I still appreciate the recipe!
Hi Cyn, The numbers are general guidelines but will vary depending on many factors, such as activity level, insulin resistance, weight and more. There is no single magic number, just conventional recommendations that are a good starting point. I will have a macro calculator coming soon that will help determine what is best for each person, but even then it’s an approximation. The only way to know for sure is to test. If keto is your goal, it’s usually best to start lower and then see if you can stay in ketosis when increasing.
Chocolate is sold in chocolate bars, which come in dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate varieties. Some bars that are mostly chocolate have other ingredients blended into the chocolate, such as nuts, raisins or crisped rice. Chocolate is used as an ingredient in a huge variety of candy bars, which typically contain various confectionary ingredients (e.g., nougat, wafers, caramel, nuts, etc.) which are coated in chocolate.
That’s a great question, Tania, and unfortunately, the problem is also the solution. Saturated fat is, by definition, solid at room temperature (as opposed to unsaturated, which is liquid at room temp), so it is what makes the chocolate hold its shape. If you were to use another fat, you’d have to add some sort of stabilizers, either chemical (gross) or starch (which would make the chocolate taste more like a brownie, but with a really bad texture, and I wouldn’t recommend this). I have seen fiber, such as acacia or psyllium, used in commercial chocolate, but I have never tried it myself. So, unfortunately, coconut oil is your best bet in this case. It does have many health benefits, but I understand that it is not appropriate if you have to watch your saturated fat intake.

If you look around the web, you’ll see that many people have taken on the challenge of a zero-carb diet, which involves eating only meat and fat. The downside of this diet is that it can be exceptionally high in saturated fat and contains no fiber, something that helps digestion, and no vegetables or fruit, which provide critical vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Considering that experts recommend talking to your doctor even before going on a ketogenic diet — and this is a much more severe form — you need to consult a medical professional before attempting the zero-carb diet!
Hi Barb, That can definitely be it. Losing when you are close to goal can be more difficult. It could also be that your body’s healthy weight is a little higher than what you’d like – which doesn’t mean you can’t lose, but makes it more difficult. If just eating Keto foods isn’t working, double check the macros for your weight and see if the amount you’re eating needs to be adjusted. You’ll find more help and support in our support group here.
Hi, I have been giving ditch the carbs a go…so far only in the form of bread,pasta,rice, this was quiet hard for me as I didn’t realise how much I got through a day! I’m a fussy meat eater as I was a veggie for a number of years so still only eating veggie quorn. I don’t drink fizzy drinks or alcohol. I have already cut out cakes/biscuits apart from the odd biscuit! I have lost weight and I still need to loose more…I really want to change my children’s diet also but I have one child who will eat/try anything and a two year old who won’t eat vegetables, luckily she has never been keen on pasta,rice or potatoes anyway but think I will struggle with her…so any tips welcome! She loves all fruit which I let her have as she doesn’t eat veggies but not sure if this is wise!
